Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 220 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing, reading, and thinking on a weekly basis in an informal setting.

self-defense p.58-59
I think Meursault kills the Arab guy in self-defense because first the Arab put his hands in his pocket when he sees Meursault. Making Meursault worry about it and taking the gun for safety. Second, the Arab drew his knife and held it up to Meursault in the sun. Blinding Meursault. Blinded and with an Arab guy in front with a knife. Meursault squeezed the gun to be prepared for any event and then the gun gave. This is called self-defense.

That can be one of the reason why he killed the Arabic person. This scene can be open to many interpretation to the readers. To me, I think his action was impulsive.
ReplyDeleteSince we established that he could be mentally ill, such as autistic, I do believe it was self defense. I know of this autistic person who freaks out when she hears loud noises, so she starts screaming and punching things around her. During this intense situation I wouldnt expect him to do anything else differently. He is not clear about the situation and emotions he is feeling around him.
