Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 220 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing, reading, and thinking on a weekly basis in an informal setting.
I really liked "WHY POETRY: A Partial Autobiography" because I can connect to the speaker. For the speaker, poem is his savior. As for me, I can express my feelings in writing poems than talking. The speaker struggle figuring out who he really is and writing poem became his key to his true self. He felt the freedom to express his thoughts and feelings into words and no one is judging him. I can understand his feelings, I don't know that much about myself and writing poems became a therapy to understand myself better.
The poem that I like the best is "from winehouse" because the poem contains lyrics of the song "Rehab" by Amy Winehouse. By the way the song is really good! Both the poem and the song presents a addiction problem. The poem that I like the is "Gramercy Park" because the poem contains a lot of history references that I don't remember.
The poem that caught my eye was “ Winehouse” because it gave details to what was going on in the moment. It stated that he was drinking so much wine that it started to taste like water, in other means that he was drinking it so much and got use to the flavor that it didn’t effect him to drink it cup by cup he probably most likely just drunk it straight out of the bottle.
I truly enjoyed “the Winehouse “. the lyrics from aime wine house “Rehab” really made the poem very engaging. After our class discussion I clearly understood the poem of house the author was writing in regards to the experience of the singer her self. I wasn’t captivated by the “Gramercy Park” poem because I didn’t understand what was going on in the poem until the last line was used in reference to you having one key and the Doorman keeps them both. It was a little confusing. It was also difficult for me to stay engaged as I read the poem. I have been in the Gramercy neighborhood it’s very luxurious as compared to the rest of the big apple.
I found Why Poetry: A Partial Autobiography to be my favorite out of the three. Craig Morgan Teicher writes a short poem about his life and the struggles he faced with himself. In the beginning of the poem, he talks about how he has "longed for something to which to apprentice myself." (2-4) and doesn't want to follow in the footsteps of his mother. He wants to find something that he can pursue in life and not be a shadow of anyone. However, he finds it difficult to fit in everywhere. Teicher feels like a "bear club moving in with a family of turtles" when playing baseball with the other boys and felt like the other boys hated him for a reason he wasn't quite so. He has come face to face with his dark thoughts too many times and he felt like the world was punishing just him with these feelings. Eventually he found a home in poetry. He would turn his darkness into poems where it "is rotting harmlessly...I've saved myself and my life and those I love for light." He found away to express his emotions that isn't a destructive way and found himself something he can be a apprentice of which he has been searching for since he was a child. I can relate to the author because I too am trying out figure out where I belong. I'm not sure what I'm good but I hope to find out very soon so I can also feel content with my life and hope to help others with my talent as well.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite of the poems was definitely “Winehouse”. Even before I understood the complete context of the poem, and that it was apart of Amy Whinehouse’s fan poetry. The poem read with such a rhythm and you could see the underlying story behind it. The cliché saying “three sheets to the wind” caught my eye because it’s actually one that my parents use when they’re talking about someone being obliterated, drunk. I like that the title goes with the wine theme and that it all ties together about being lost in the addiction of alcohol and I think it was just really well put together.
