1) The poem is not to be confused w/ a paraphrase.
2) Avoid speed-reading. Discover the natural rhythm of
the work.
3) Read it aloud.
Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 220 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing, reading, and thinking on a weekly basis in an informal setting.
Reading poetry out loud has helped me a lot. It helps me connect with what the author is trying to express as they write the poem. I have Sped read a poem before and the times I’ve done that I’d have to re-read it a couple of times until I understood the natural rhythm of the poem. I believe poetry is very interesting because they can go from Ryming to not have two words connect in any way. Now when John ciardi says a Poem is not to be confused with a paraphrase I believe is logic because the reading shouldn’t be trying to interpret the authors writing into something else instead the reader should be taking in what the write they read along.
ReplyDeleteI I love poetry, but hate it at the same time. I love that In poetry you can express a deep message in a couple of sentences. I love that you can play with the structure of the poems to help express your message. I love that you have to decode a couple of sentences to get the message, and in a way it sometimes make me feel smarter when I could decode it and understand it on my own. Poems has the power to really capture how you feel, and transform it into something beautiful on paper. I don’t exactly hate poetry, because hate is a strong word. What I dislike about poetry is the fact I have to decode poem to fully understand it, you have to read between the lines. I love and dislike poetry for the same reason. Something I have such a hard time understanding a poem and the answer would be in my face the whole time. I get caught up in overthinking a poem because I think it’s supposed to be more complicated than it should be. I mean in the end I guess you could say I love poetry more than I dislike it
